About

about the ceramics

Iuni Ceramics is a small pottery studio based in the Westwerk in Leipzig west and is founded by Lisa Fröhlich in 2022. Her ceramics are a mix of colorful pieces to cheer you up but also timeless funktional pieces to last a lifetime. Using the potters wheel or handbuild, every single piece is carefully handmade in her studio what makes it 100% unique.

meet the maker

I have always longing for more creativity throughout my life. I've tried out a lot of stuff like sewing, knitting, illustrations and so much more. Unfortunatly nothing worked out for me really. So in december 2021 when I was working for a swedish fashion brand the pandemic didn't allow our team to have a proper christmas party in our company.  So one girl from the team invited us to her home for a privat potter christmas evening. I fell in love with the material immediately. So one week later I got the chance to sit on the potters wheel for the first time. And just like that it all began. Less than 4 weeks passed and I ordered my very own wheel. It was a shimpo whispers that I still use. I started throwing in my bedroom. Then my kids got the bigger room so I had to move to our cellar which was dark, cold and wet. In February 2024 I finally found the studio of my dreams in a great area in Leipzig west. The studio is based in an old Villa right in front of the canal.

the work / the vision

My work is a mix of creating ceramics for sale but also to teach others the techniques of the potters wheel. Besides that I offer the opportunity to create your favourit pieces at the open studio that is every thursday. As the studio is very small I only have around 7 people in my studio at the same time what allowes you to really dive into the material without any stress and too many noices. It also allowes myself to really get to know the persons that enter my studio and create an atmosphere that almost feel like we're having a friends come together.

the process

To create a mug of a clump of clay contains a lot of steps and needs time. That is what makes every single piece special and differs from big home decor companies.

the steps

wedging, weigh, throwing, let it dry to leatherhard, trimming, stamp, let it dry to bonehard, load the kiln, bisque firing at 900°C, unload the kiln, sanding, washing, waxing, glazing, cleaning, load the kiln, glaze firing at 1220°C, unload the kiln, sanding, washing, testing, taking photos, packing, send, done.
